Last-ditch move to save Russia-EU summit

Steinmeier & LavrovGermany is making a last-ditch attempt to rescue a European Union summit with Russia from disaster, amid increasing calls within the bloc for a rethink of policy towards Moscow.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier, German foreign minister, will fly to Moscow on Tuesday to try to prevent this Friday's summit from being dominated by disputes between Russia and former Soviet-bloc countries such as Poland, Lithuania and Estonia.

Ahead of Summit, Russians Stick to Meat Ban for Poland

Offal meatRussia has sent the European Union an unsatisfactory reply making no concessions toward ending a ban on meat imports from Poland, EU diplomats said Friday, a week before a key EU-Russia summit near Samara.

The trade dispute is holding up talks on a new strategic partnership pact between Moscow and the 27-nation bloc covering cooperation on energy, trade, human rights and foreign policy.
